Multi-instrumentalist, artist and writer Yoshe Malkus surprises again with his latest epic piece of composition ‘I Wanna Die As Badass As Carlos Fortino Sámano’ in which he tells the story of cool-headed rebel leader Carlos Fortino Sámano’s execution – for which Sámano is still well-known and which truly is simply badass. A photograph of the Mexican revolutionary is to be seen on the cover of the single unblindfolded and cigar smoking, purely calm only moments before he himself gave his executioners the order to fire. Yoshe Malkus creates this soundscape by a perfect build up which starts off picturing a melancholic easiness – on one hand the serenity and dominance of Fortino Sámano but on the other hand doesn’t overlook the fact that a soul is going to be send home – until it reaches it’s climax in a brutal chaos of distorted guitars which reminds of the typical gunshot sounds in Westerns – thus created with a bottleneck - collapsing into a quiet creepy melody, campfire crickling and crickets singing – Sámano’s lullaby for night time. An appendix brings to mind that the voyage continues, literally, by noises of a train. Of course it can also evoke a different story in the listeners head, this one was just the inspiration for this track like it’s clear in the title. One gets the feeling of the mystic loneliness of the lone wolf straying through the desolated vastnesses of Wild West America, or the coolness that’s inherent in the hero during a 12 o’clock duel. Yoshe Malkus perfectly combines atmospheric sounds with music – he for instance recreates the buzzing heat of the desert at day time using guitar feedback and the whirring noises of electricity from an amp. His musical evolvement cannot go without notice and is a huge step up. This time completely different to his previous opus but evidently obvious in his acquainted signature style of creating an alive dynamic captivating straight forward streaming vortex which lets you no other choice than diving deep into his created imagery. Yoshe Malkus is a storyteller without the need for words and with a feeling for timing, dramatic composition and the ability to bring his music alive.
The track would go easily for the soundtrack of a Western movie scene. Yoshe Malkus perfectly combines the well-known Western atmosphere and feeling by using common instruments, sounds and techniques of this genre, like the harmonica, an organ, chimes, castanets, flutes, whistling, trumpets, a xylophone, the rather uncommon but very fitting mandolin and the usual band instruments and ads a modern twist to it with more unusual fabrications of song writing for the direction of this kind of music.
Oh, and yet it was written, recorded and mixed in an amount of time of half a day – but that’s pretty standard for this artist.
